WOW! The results far surpassed the expectations for Event 1 of the Walleye League! We saw half the field boat over 50 pounds in their four-hour matches, including the new match total weight record of 107-11 by Eric McQuoid and Steve Labs.
The action started early, with Miller and Solberg boating the first walleye of the H2H season less than 10 minutes into the year. They kept that pace going the majority of the day and got the win by over 24 pounds. McQuoid and Labs started slow, but they found their groove in the second half. They put up back-to-back 30+ pound quarters to end their day and crossed that 100lb mark with an 8-pound 6-ounce Green Bay giant! The defending Walleye League champions, Nick and Andrew Kotowski, were down almost 20lbs in their matchup at the halfway point. They mounted a huge comeback in the fourth quarter, putting up 47-15 and getting a win to start their season. Shawn Grams and his daughter, Riley Grams, took some time to hit their stride in the grinder matchup of the day, but stuck with it and put 16-8 on the scoreboard, which was good enough for the win. Daun and Jodar were on a solid program, steadily putting 4 to 6-pound fish in the boat. Their matchup appeared to be a tight one in the first quarter, but turned into a runaway after they boated 32-12 in the second quarter.
Hopefully, this event is a sign of the great season we have ahead of us for the H2H Walleye League. The next two events take us to the Winnebago System, where some teams who struggled in Event 1 will have to get their season back on track. The Winnebago System will likely bring smaller fish and smaller total weights, but much tighter matchups and higher intensity. The first event was a lot of fun, but our anglers will truly be put to the test at the next two events.
